Your Flight Was Cancelled: Rights, Refunds, and Rebooking
What airlines owe you when they cancel, how to choose between rebooking and a refund, and how to get moving fastest.

What you are owed
If the airline cancels your flight, US rules entitle you to a full cash refund to your original payment method, regardless of fare type, if you choose not to travel. The airline may offer a credit first; you do not have to accept it.
Rebooking
The airline will rebook you on its next available flight at no charge. If that is a day away, ask about other carriers; some airlines will endorse your ticket to a competitor for weather-independent cancellations, and a fresh one-way on another airline is sometimes faster and cheap enough to justify.
Delays and extras
For controllable cancellations (crew, maintenance, systems), the large US carriers have committed to meals and, for overnight delays, hotel rooms. Weather cancellations carry no such commitment. Keep receipts.
Do this in the first five minutes
Speed decides how good your options are, because seats on the next flights fill fast. Get in the rebooking line and start a second channel at the same time: the airline app often rebooks before you reach an agent, and a phone agent can work your case while you stand in line. Screenshot the cancellation notice and note the reason if the app shows one, since a controllable cause unlocks meals and a hotel. Do not leave the secure area until you have a confirmed new plan or a refund.
Refund or rebook: how to choose
Take the rebooking if the next flight is soon enough and the trip is still worth taking; the airline moves you at no charge and keeps your fare. Take the cash refund, which US rules require in your original form of payment on a cancellation regardless of fare type, when the airline's next seat is a day out, the trip no longer makes sense, or you can buy a faster option on another airline for a reasonable price. You do not have to accept a travel credit in place of the refund.
Significant delays count too
The same cash-refund right applies when the airline does not cancel but changes the flight significantly and you decline the new plan: broadly a departure or arrival moved more than three hours domestic or six hours international, an added connection, a downgrade, or a changed airport. If a delay creeps past those thresholds and the new timing does not work for you, you can ask for the refund rather than fly it.
