The 24-Hour Flight Cancellation Rule, Explained
How the US Department of Transportation's 24-hour rule works, which tickets it covers, and how to use it.

The rule
US airlines and ticket agents must let you cancel a reservation within 24 hours of booking for a full refund, without a fee, as long as the booking was made at least seven days before departure. It applies to tickets to, from, or within the United States on any fare type, including basic economy.
What it covers
Any airline operating to or from the US, any fare class, and bookings made online, by phone, or through an agency. Airlines may satisfy the rule by allowing a 24-hour free hold instead of a refund, but most simply refund.
What it does not cover
Bookings made within seven days of departure. Flights that do not touch the US. Changes, as opposed to cancellations: if you want a different date, cancel and rebook within the window.
The window runs on the clock, not business days
The 24 hours count from the moment the ticket is issued, including weekends and holidays — a Friday-evening booking has to be cancelled by Friday evening, not Monday morning. It is measured against ticketing time, so if you held a fare and paid later, the clock starts when you paid. Note the exact timestamp on your confirmation email and act with a margin, because a cancellation submitted a few minutes late falls outside the rule and back under the fare's normal cancellation terms.
Use it as a free hold while you confirm plans
The rule effectively gives you a 24-hour test drive on any fare. If you are waiting on a hotel, a companion's schedule, or a cheaper fare you think might appear, you can book the flight you want now to lock the price and seat, then cancel for a full refund if the rest of the trip does not come together. It is also your safety net for an honest mistake — a wrong date, a misspelled name, the wrong airport — caught within the day. Because it costs nothing when used in time, there is rarely a reason to book a nonrefundable ticket you are not sure about without noting the deadline first.
How to use it
Call (708) 866-8751 with your confirmation code before the 24 hours are up. The agent cancels and the refund goes to your original payment method within seven business days.
