Name Correction Rules by Airline

What each airline allows when a passenger name is misspelled, what it costs, and what cannot be changed.

The common ground

No major airline lets you transfer a ticket to a different person. All of them allow correcting a typo for the same person, and most handle adding or removing a middle name or fixing a swapped first and last name.

Fees

US carriers often make small corrections free when done before travel; larger corrections or those close to departure may carry a reissue fee. International carriers, especially Gulf and European airlines, more often charge a fixed correction fee.

Correction versus a new ticket

The line airlines draw is whether the ticket still belongs to the same person. Fixing a few letters, a swapped first and last name, or a missing middle name is a correction. Changing the ticket to a different traveler is a transfer, which no major airline allows; that person needs their own ticket. A large change that effectively creates a new identity, rather than fixing a typo, can be treated as a transfer and refused, so the earlier and smaller the fix, the smoother it goes.

Why the name must match your ID

Under the TSA Secure Flight program the name, date of birth, and gender on the reservation are checked against your government ID, so the ticket needs to match the ID you will show at the airport. Middle names do not have to match exactly on most domestic carriers, and a suffix or a hyphen is rarely a problem, but a wrong first or last name is. For international travel the name must match your passport, which makes corrections there more important and sometimes slower.

Award and third-party bookings

A ticket booked with miles or through an online travel agency is harder to correct, because the airline may need the booking channel to touch it first. If you booked through a third party, the correction often has to start there. Booking directly, or by phone with an agent who holds the record, keeps a later fix in one set of hands.

Timing

Corrections on the day of travel are difficult and sometimes refused, and international corrections can need several days. Check every name against the ID or passport the day you book and call (708) 866-8751 at once if something is wrong.
