Standby and Same-Day Confirmed: How to Catch an Earlier Flight

The difference between flying standby and paying for a same-day confirmed change, what each costs, and when the airport agent can just move you.

Standby vs same-day confirmed are not the same

Both get you onto a different flight on your travel day, but they work differently. Standby puts you on a list for an earlier flight and gives you a seat only if one is open at departure — you wait, and you might not make it. Same-day confirmed change moves you to a specific earlier flight with a guaranteed seat right now, if that flight has availability in your fare's cabin. Standby is about hoping a seat opens; same-day confirmed is about locking one.

What each one costs

The pricing varies by airline and status, but the pattern is consistent.

  • Same-day standby for an earlier flight on the same route is often free, especially for loyalty members, though some fares are excluded.
  • Same-day confirmed change usually carries a modest fee on most carriers, waived or reduced for elite tiers and premium fares.
  • Basic economy is frequently barred from both — another reason to read what that fare gives up before booking.
  • A full flight can close both options regardless of fee, so earlier in the day is safer.

When the airport can just move you for free

If the airline causes the problem — your flight is delayed, cancelled, or you misconnect — moving you to another flight is on them, not a same-day change you pay for. That is a rebooking, and it is free. Same-day standby and confirmed changes are for when you simply want to fly earlier than your booked flight, not when the airline has disrupted your trip. Do not pay a change fee for something a disruption entitles you to for free; if you are unsure which situation you are in, ask.

How to line it up

Rules on who qualifies, what it costs, and whether your fare is even eligible differ by airline. Call (708) 866-8751 and a licensed agent checks whether an earlier flight has room, tells you if standby or a confirmed change is the smarter play for your fare, and sets it up — or, if the airline disrupted your trip, gets you rebooked at no charge.
