Basic Economy Explained: What You Give Up for the Lower Fare
What basic economy excludes on each major US airline, when it is worth it, and when a standard fare is the better buy.

What basic economy is
Basic economy is the same seat as standard economy with restrictions attached: no changes, seat assigned at check-in, last boarding group, and no upgrades. The fare difference to standard economy is typically 20 to 60 dollars each way.
Carry-on bags: the big difference
United's basic economy on most domestic routes excludes a full-size carry-on; only a personal item is allowed. Delta, American, Alaska, and JetBlue include the carry-on. This is the most frequent surprise at the gate.
When it is worth it
A short trip you are certain about, traveling light, alone, without a seat preference. In that case basic economy is simply cheaper.
The other restrictions
Beyond the carry-on, basic economy assigns your seat at check-in, so a group is scattered across the cabin unless you pay to pick seats, which erases much of the saving. You board in the last group, when overhead bin space near your seat is usually gone. Elite frequent-flyer perks such as free upgrades and priority boarding do not apply, and on most carriers the fare earns fewer or no redeemable miles. A few airlines have relaxed the no-changes rule to allow a same-day standby, but the ticket still cannot be changed to a different day.
International basic economy
On transatlantic and other long-haul routes, basic economy is stricter than the domestic version. It typically excludes a checked bag entirely, so the first bag fee on a long-haul flight, often 60 to 75 dollars each way, wipes out the fare saving for anyone not traveling with just a carry-on. It also blocks seat selection until check-in, which on a ten-hour flight is a real drawback for couples and families.
How to decide in one minute
Buy basic economy only if all of these are true: your dates are certain, you travel with a personal item or a carry-on the airline still allows, you are flying alone or do not mind split seats, and you do not need to earn full miles. If any one is false, price the standard fare, since the 20-to-60-dollar gap usually buys back the flexibility and the bag.
When it is not
Any trip that might change, any trip with a family that wants to sit together, and any United itinerary where you have a carry-on. Standard economy on US carriers can be changed without a fee; basic economy cannot.
