Fare Classes Explained: Why Two Economy Tickets Cost Different Amounts

Economy, premium economy, business, and first are cabins. Within each cabin the airline sells a ladder of fare classes, identified by a letter, each with its own price, rules, and number of seats. A cheap Q fare and an expensive Y fare buy the same seat with different rules.

Fare brands

Airlines now group fare classes into brands with plain names: basic economy, main cabin, comfort, flex, and so on. The brand decides whether you can change, get a refund, pick a seat, or bring a full-size carry-on.

What the letter affects

Change and refund rules, upgrade eligibility, how many miles you earn, and standby rights. Deeply discounted classes often earn few miles and cannot be upgraded.

What the letters mean

The single letter on your ticket is the booking class, and airlines share broad conventions. Y, B, and M are usually full-fare or higher economy classes with generous rules; H, Q, V, and N tend to be mid-to-deep discounts; and the lowest classes such as E or the carrier's basic-economy code carry the tightest restrictions. J, C, and D are business-cabin classes; F and A are first. The letter, not the cabin, is what fare rules and upgrade software actually read.

• Higher-priced economy classes (Y, B, M): changeable, fully mileage-earning, often upgradeable.
• Discount classes (H, Q, V, N, S, T): cheaper, some change fees or fare differences, reduced mileage.
• Lowest classes (basic economy codes): no changes, minimal or no miles, no upgrades.

Why the same flight shows several prices

An airline splits each cabin into a fixed number of seats per booking class and sells the cheapest classes first. When the four seats in the lowest class are gone, the next search returns the next class up at a higher price, even though the flight is the same and half-empty. This is why a fare jumps between two searches minutes apart, and why two people on the same flight paid different amounts: they bought different booking classes, not different seats.

Miles and upgrades follow the class

How many redeemable miles and elite-qualifying credits a ticket earns is set by its booking class, so a deeply discounted economy fare can earn a fraction of what a full-fare economy ticket earns on the identical flight. Upgrade eligibility works the same way: some discount classes are not upgradeable at all, with miles or with an elite certificate. If earning or upgrading matters, the cheapest class is not always the best value.
