What airline flexibility already covers for free, what trip insurance adds, the 'cancel for any reason' option, and how to decide on a given trip.

What you already have
On the major US carriers, standard economy and above can be changed without a fee for the fare difference, and a cancelled ticket becomes a credit good for a year. Airline cancellations and significant schedule changes are refunded in cash under US rules. That covers the common cases: a date shift, a change of plans, an airline problem.
What insurance adds
Insurance pays in situations the airline's own rules do not.
- Cash back on a non-refundable ticket when you cancel for a covered reason: illness, a death in the family, jury duty, job loss on some policies.
- Medical cover abroad, which US health insurance often does not provide.
- Trip interruption: the cost of getting home early and unused prepaid hotels.
- Delayed baggage and missed-connection payments, with paperwork.
Cancel for any reason
A 'cancel for any reason' upgrade pays back about 50 to 75 percent of the trip cost with no reason required, usually only if bought within two to three weeks of the first deposit. It is the only cover for changing your mind.
Deciding
Domestic trip, standard fare, no prepaid hotel: the airline's own flexibility is enough. International trip, several thousand dollars prepaid, older travelers or a health history: insurance earns its price. Basic economy tickets cannot be changed at all, so insurance is the only protection on them.
