Summer Flights to India and Pakistan: Carriers, Bags, and Booking Windows
Which airlines serve South Asia from the US, baggage allowances that change the real price, and when to book.

The carriers
Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad via the Gulf; Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and KLM via Europe; Air India nonstop from New York, Newark, Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco; United nonstop from Newark and San Francisco. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a frequent value option.
Bags decide the real price
Gulf carriers usually include two 23 kg bags from the US; European carriers' Light fares include none. A fare that is fifty dollars cheaper can cost two hundred more once bags are added. Agents compare the all-in price.
Booking windows
Summer travel (mid-June to August) and December should be booked three to five months out. Student fares with extra baggage exist on several carriers and require proof of enrollment.
The routing decision: Gulf, Europe, or nonstop
The three ways into South Asia trade time, comfort, and price differently. The Gulf carriers through Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi are usually the most comfortable and the most generous on bags, with a single well-timed connection. The European carriers can be cheaper but their cheapest fares strip the checked bag, and a tight connection in a busy summer hub carries misconnection risk. The Air India and United nonstops save the most time but sell out early for summer and December and are rarely the lowest fare. On a trip with heavy bags and family, the Gulf routing's all-in price often wins even when its headline fare is higher — which is exactly the comparison to ask for.
Confirm the visa before you commit to dates
India requires a visa for US travelers (an e-visa for most tourist trips), and Pakistan requires one as well; neither is checked by the airline at purchase, but either can stop you at boarding. Sort the visa timeline before you lock nonrefundable summer dates, since processing can take longer in peak season. If your trip visits both countries or several Indian cities, a multi-city ticket usually beats stringing together separate round trips — and because names must match the passport exactly, it is worth having every traveler's passport in front of you when you book so middle names and spellings go in right the first time.
Name spelling and passports
Names must match the passport exactly, including middle names, and passports need six months of validity. Call (708) 866-8751; the agent checks both before ticketing.
