June through August fares to Europe are set early and rarely fall. Booking between January and March captures most of the savings; by May the cheap inventory is gone.

Cheaper gateways

Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid, and Reykjavik tend to price lower than London, Paris, and Rome from the US. Flying into one of them and taking a short-haul flight or train onward often beats a nonstop to the expensive capital.

Why summer fares don't drop the way people wait for

Europe in summer is the textbook case of demand the airlines can count on, so they set the fares high early and simply hold them — there is no glut of empty seats to discount as the date nears. Watching and waiting for a summer sale usually means paying more, not less, because the cheap fare buckets sell out first and the price only ratchets up. The move is to book the cheap bucket in the January-to-March window and stop watching. If you are nervous about committing, book a changeable standard fare or use the 24-hour rule to hold, rather than gambling on a drop that rarely comes for peak-summer travel.

The gateway trick needs a realistic connection

Flying into Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid, or Reykjavik and continuing on can beat a nonstop to an expensive capital, but only if the second leg is built sensibly. On one through-ticket the airline protects your onward connection and your bags; on a separately booked low-cost hop you re-check bags, clear passport control at the gateway, and own any misconnection — so leave three to four hours, not one. A train onward from the gateway sidesteps the bag limits and the second security line entirely and is often the calmer choice. Price the nonstop, the connecting through-ticket, and the gateway-plus-train against each other before deciding the cheap gateway fare is really the cheapest way in.
