The calendar

Spring break runs late February through mid-April, staggered by school district and university. The second and third weeks of March are the peak for Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

What spikes

Cancun, Punta Cana, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Fares to these can double in peak weeks.

What stays reasonable

Cities outside the sun belt, Europe in March, and destinations reached with a connection rather than a nonstop. Flying midweek within a peak week also cuts the premium sharply.

Shift the dates before you shift the destination

The premium is concentrated in a few specific days, so the cheapest lever is usually the calendar, not the map. Flying out midweek and returning midweek — a Tuesday-to-Tuesday rather than Saturday-to-Saturday — can cut the peak-week premium sharply on the same route. So can shifting your week by one: the last week of February or the first week of April often prices well below the mid-March peak, if your school district's break is flexible. Ask for a few date pairs around your window before you give up on a destination; the spread between a peak Saturday and a shoulder Tuesday is frequently larger than the gap between two cities.

Book it before the New Year if the dates are fixed

Spring break is the one holiday where the dates are set by a school calendar you cannot move, and the airlines know it. Fares to the sun-belt destinations climb steadily from the New Year and the cheap seats on the peak dates sell first, so the window to book March travel is really early-to-mid January, with early February the practical last call. Waiting for a sale rarely pays off on these dates because there is no slack demand to discount. If your dates are locked, treat booking as time-sensitive; the 24-hour rule lets you hold a good fare risk-free while you confirm the rest of the trip.
