After Labor Day, demand drops and stays low until the week before Thanksgiving, apart from Columbus Day weekend. Fares follow: this is the cheapest stretch of the year on most domestic routes and many international ones.

Best bets

Europe in October, Hawaii in September and October, Florida and the Caribbean in early November, and national park cities like Salt Lake City, Denver, and Bozeman after the summer crowds leave.

Why the fares actually fall

The shoulder-season drop is not a sale the airlines choose to run — it is what happens when demand simply leaves. Kids are back in school, summer vacations are over, and the holiday rush has not started, so planes that were full in August fly with empty seats in late September and October. Airlines lower fares to fill them, and because the soft demand persists for weeks, the low prices hold rather than spiking as your date nears. That is the opposite of the holiday pattern, and it is why this stretch rewards flexibility instead of punishing it. If your dates can move at all, aim for the weeks between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

The one season you can safely wait out

At almost every other time of year the advice is to book early, because fares only rise. Fall shoulder season is the exception. With demand soft and seats to fill, fares stay low even a couple of weeks out, so there is little penalty for waiting and sometimes a reward as an airline discounts a still-empty flight. That does not mean wait forever — a specific popular route or a holiday-adjacent date can still tighten — but it does mean you can shop a live quote close to your dates without the usual cost of hesitation. Midweek departures stretch the saving further, since the leisure travelers still out there cluster on weekends.
