Which Florida Airport to Use for the Theme Parks
Orlando, Sanford, Tampa, and Melbourne compared for Disney, Universal, and the Space Coast.

Orlando International (MCO)
The default. Twenty to thirty minutes to both Disney and Universal, every major airline, the most nonstops, and the widest range of fares. Book here unless another airport is meaningfully cheaper.
Orlando Sanford (SFB)
Forty-five minutes north of the parks. Served mainly by Allegiant from smaller cities. Sometimes far cheaper, but factor in car rental or a longer ride.
Tampa (TPA)
An hour and a half to Orlando. Useful when combining the parks with the Gulf beaches, or when Tampa fares are lower on Southwest.
Melbourne (MLB)
An hour east. Closest to the Space Coast and Kennedy Space Center; limited airline choice.
When the cheaper airport actually wins
Sanford and the further-out airports advertise low fares, but the number that matters is the total once ground transport is in. A fare that is meaningfully cheaper into Sanford can be erased by the longer drive, the car rental, and the toll roads up to the parks — and Allegiant's limited schedule there may not match your dates. As a rule, Sanford or Tampa wins only when the fare gap clearly beats the extra time and cost of getting from that airport to your hotel. For most park trips the wide competition at MCO keeps its all-in cost lowest anyway, which is why it is the default.
Match the airport to which park
The parks are not all in the same place. MCO is closest to both the Disney and Universal complexes in southwest Orlando. The beaches pair naturally with Tampa. Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast are closest to Melbourne, an hour east of the theme parks. If your trip mixes the parks with a beach or a launch, price a two-airport itinerary — in one, out the other — rather than backtracking across the state, and weigh a one-way car rental against a single round-trip airport.
