Flights to Puerto Rico from the Mainland: No Passport, Many Nonstops
San Juan and the smaller airports, the cities with nonstop flights, the cheapest months, and why Puerto Rico prices like a domestic trip.

Domestic in every way that matters
Puerto Rico is a US territory: no passport for US citizens, no customs on the way back, domestic baggage rules, and domestic fares. San Juan (SJU) is the main airport, with Aguadilla (BQN) and Ponce (PSE) serving the west and south with a few mainland flights.
Nonstop cities
New York, Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston all have nonstops to San Juan, with JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Delta, American, United, and Southwest competing. Orlando and Fort Lauderdale to San Juan are among the cheapest routes on the island, often under $80 one-way.
Cheapest months
Late August through early December, outside Thanksgiving week, prices lowest, with September the floor; that is also hurricane season, so flexibility matters. Mid-December to April is the peak, with Christmas week and spring break the most expensive dates.
Beyond San Juan
Aguadilla has nonstops from New York, Newark, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale that can be cheaper than San Juan for the west coast beaches and Rincón. Vieques and Culebra are reached by small planes from San Juan or by ferry from Ceiba.
The cheapest fares fall in hurricane season
The late-August-to-early-December window is cheapest for a reason: it overlaps the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, and September is both the fare floor and the busiest month for storms. Because Puerto Rico prices as a domestic trip, a cheap nonrefundable fare there gives you little room to move if a storm threatens. If you travel in those months, favor a fare class you can change without a fee and watch the airline's travel-waiver page as your dates approach — carriers routinely let you rebook without penalty when a storm is forecast. Travel insurance is worth pricing for a trip booked far ahead into that window.
