Nonstop islands
From New York and Newark: San Juan, Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Montego Bay, Kingston, Aruba, Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Barbados. From Boston and Philadelphia the list is shorter but covers San Juan, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, and Aruba on most days.
Cheapest destinations
San Juan and Punta Cana consistently post the lowest fares because JetBlue, Delta, United, American, and Spirit all compete. Barbados, St. Maarten, and the smaller islands cost more and price better with a connection through San Juan or Miami.
When to go
Late April through June and September through early December are the cheapest windows. Hurricane season runs June to November; September and October carry the most risk and the lowest fares. Christmas through Easter is peak.
Route through San Juan for the smaller islands
San Juan is the Caribbean's connecting hub. For islands with thin nonstop service from the Northeast — the smaller Eastern Caribbean stops especially — a fare to San Juan on a mainline carrier plus a short regional hop is frequently cheaper and more reliable than the one or two direct flights a week. It also keeps you on US soil for the connection, so there is no second customs clearance. When you compare, count the total travel time and the layover, not just the headline fare.
Hurricane season is the real trade-off
The cheapest fares fall in September and October precisely because that is the peak of hurricane season. A named storm can close an airport for days, and a cheap nonrefundable ticket gives you little room to move. If you travel in those months, favor a fare class that allows changes, and keep an eye on the airline's travel-waiver page as your dates approach — carriers routinely let you rebook without a fee when a storm is forecast for your island. Travel insurance is worth pricing for a beach trip booked far ahead.
