Nonstops
Delta flies Atlanta and New York to Lagos and Accra; United flies Washington Dulles to Lagos and Accra. Everything else connects through Europe (British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM) or the Gulf (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian via Addis Ababa).
Baggage
Allowances vary widely. Delta and United typically include two bags on West Africa routes; some European carriers' cheapest fares include one or none. The all-in price with two checked bags is what to compare.
When to book
December is the most expensive month by a wide margin; book by September. Summer is the second peak. Late January to March and late September to early November are the cheapest windows.
Nonstop versus one-stop is a real trade-off here
The Delta and United nonstops to Lagos and Accra are convenient but frequently the most expensive option, and there are only a handful of them a week. A one-stop through Europe or the Gulf can save several hundred dollars and often runs on a wider-bodied aircraft, at the cost of a longer total trip and a connection to clear. Weigh the fare gap against the layover length and the airport — an overnight connection in Europe may need a transit visa or a hotel, which erases the saving. When a routing has two carriers on separate tickets, your bags and any misconnection are your own responsibility, so favor a single through-ticket.
Confirm the visa and passport validity before you book
Both Nigeria and Ghana require a visa for US travelers, and both, like most countries, want at least six months of passport validity beyond your travel dates. Neither is something the airline checks when you buy the ticket, but you can be denied boarding without them. Sort the visa timeline before you commit to nonrefundable dates, and if you are visiting both countries on one trip, a multi-city ticket into one capital and out of the other saves a backtrack — an agent can price that against two separate round trips.
