TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and CLEAR: Which One a Flyer Needs

What each program actually does, how they differ, who should get which, and whether paying for more than one is worth it.

Three programs, three jobs

These names get lumped together, but they solve different problems. TSA PreCheck speeds you through the security screening line — shoes and laptop stay put — on domestic flights and US carriers. Global Entry speeds you through customs and immigration when you re-enter the United States from abroad, and it includes PreCheck. CLEAR is a private service that moves you to the front of the identity-check line, then you still go through screening. One is about security, one is about coming home internationally, one is about the line before security.

Who should get which

Match the program to how you fly, not to whichever is most talked about.

  • Fly mostly domestic and want faster security: TSA PreCheck is the one.
  • Travel internationally even once or twice a year: Global Entry costs a little more than PreCheck but includes it, so it is usually the better buy.
  • Fly very often through big, crowded airports and value skipping the ID line: CLEAR can stack on top of PreCheck, but it is a separate paid subscription.
  • Rarely fly: you may not recoup any of the fees — the pay-per-use math rarely favors an occasional traveler.

How you get them, and the catch

PreCheck and Global Entry are government programs with an application, a background check, and an in-person appointment, so apply well before a trip — appointment slots can be weeks out. Both last several years. A useful money note: many travel credit cards reimburse the PreCheck or Global Entry application fee, so check your card before paying out of pocket. CLEAR is a monthly or yearly subscription you can start quickly, sometimes discounted through an airline status or card.

It does not change your ticket

None of these programs affect your fare, your seat, or your boarding time — they only speed the walk through the terminal, and none override an airline's check-in and gate cutoffs. If you want help lining up a trip around a tight connection or an early international departure, call (708) 866-8751 and an agent will build the itinerary with enough margin, whatever screening program you carry.
